The Origins Of Tequila

Did you know that the roots of tequila date back to the Aztec era?

Trace those roots back far enough and you will find that this agave spirit, distilled from blue agave plants, first started as a drink of fermented sap called “pulque.” Over time and throughout the ages, that initial beverage has evolved into the tequila we know and love today.

THE BEGINNING OF MODERN DISTILLED TEQUILA
Distillation of tequila began in the 1500s, and it wasn't until the 1700s that it was commercially produced.

Since then, tequila has become a beloved spirit throughout the world, with its unique flavor and cultural significance. Whether you're sipping it neat or using it to make a refreshing margarita, tequila's origin story only adds to its appeal.

The blue agave plant is the star ingredient in all tequila, and its production process is steeped in tradition and craftsmanship. From the fields to the distilleries, every step is carefully monitored to ensure the highest quality tequila. So next time you sip on this beloved spirit, take a moment to appreciate its origins and the centuries of history that have gone into its creation!

Tequila comes primarily from the area surrounding the city of Tequila, northwest of Guadalajara, and in the Jaliscan Highlands (Los Altos de Jalisco) of the central western Mexican state of Jalisco.

TEQUILAS MUST MEET CERTAIN CRITERIA
Mexican laws state that tequila can be produced only in the state of Jalisco and limited municipalities in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

The spirit is recognized as a Mexican designation of origin product in more than 40 countries. It was protected through NAFTA in Canada and the United States until July 2020, through bilateral agreements with individual countries such as Japan and Israel, and has been a protected designation of origin product in the European Union since 1997.

When it comes to classic tequilas, the Cuervo family began distilling tequilain 1758 and in 1873, the Sauza family followed.

While those brands endure today, so many others of similar popularity and still yet others of exceptional quality are available in liquor stores.
