Celebrating World Paloma Day

Happy World Paloma Day!

Do you have some tequila leftover from Cinco de Mayo!? Celebrate in the sunshine at 5 o'clock tonight with what's often called "Summer's Simplest Drink," The PALOMA!

Today, we're raising a glass to this beloved Mexican cocktail with top-notch tequila from Bag & String Wine Merchants!

Unlike many classic cocktails which predate Prohibition, the Paloma came later in the mixologial timeline, with its origin being tied to the invention of Squirt soda in Phoenix, Arizonia in 1938. Squirt began advertising its appeal as a mixer with tequila as early as 1950, with Mexico beginning to import the soda in 1955. One of our favorite drinks writers here at the shop, David Wondrich, even deems it the National Drink of Mexico -- more prevalant and traditional even than a Margarita!

The word "Paloma" is Spanish for "Dove" and it's unclear how the cocktail received its name, though it's thought to be an error in translating the term "pomelo," wich is Spanish for “grapefruit."

INGREDIENTS

• 2 ounces tequila
• Grapefruit soda, chilled, to top
• Finish with a squeeze of lime juice and pinch of salt.
• Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge of grapefruit.

PREPARATION

• Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a Collins glass, and dip the rim in salt (optional).
• Add the tequila to the glass, and fill it with ice.
• Top with chilled grapefruit soda, and stir to combine.
• Finish with a squeeze of fresh lime as well as a pinch of salt (if not rimming the glass).
• Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge of grapefruit.
